White Sands National Park

Landscape / Nature

White Sands National Park was established in 1933 as a National Monument by President Herbert Hoover.  It was designated as a national park in 2019 by President Donald Trump.  It is the most visited National Park in New Mexico.  Many films and commercials have been filmed here.  Transformers 1 and 2 are some of the more recent major motion pictures filmed on the Park.  The area is the largest gypsum dune field on the planet.  Of the 600,000 yearly visitors, most come to play on the dunes.  While the major attraction is the large dunes, step away a little ways and you will see Yucca’s, grass fields, cottonwood trees, and a wide variety of life in these “uninhabitable” sand dunes.  If you come to visit, make sure you stop at the visitors center before entering for your first time to learn more about this wonderful vista.
